To the date of this writing, there have been 108 reviews written about this particular Shark steamer alone, and some are glowing, while others are downright nasty. For our purposes, I think the nasty reviews really shine a light on the bed bugs issue…

Using steam to kill bed bugs is certainly a viable option, but there are considerations to be made; how large is the infestation? How powerful is the steamer? Will your steam treatments interfere with the efforts being made by any paid professionals that have been brought in to treat the infestation? How much are you willing to spend to find out if the Shark cleaner is the best fit for your needs.

For steam cleaners to be an effective bed bug removal tool, they must be portable, easy to use, and powerful enough to get the job done. Bed bugs will easily be slayed at temperatures above 140 degrees, so the steamer should be emitting temperatures at about 200 degrees or hotter. Also, ‘dry steam’ is considered the best way to go, as this will cut down on the possibility of causing black mold or mildew around the home. In fact, using steam to treat bed bugs in walls and furniture may not be the best way to go.

On a positive note, the Shark Steam Pocket Multi-Purpose Portable Steamer SC630 can be used for all sorts of household applications, not just for the removal of bed bugs. Steam is an effective way to clean bathrooms and kitchens, especially grout and sink areas. If this is all you use your Shark steamer for, then the money will have been well spent.

When searching for the right Shark steamers for use in fighting the good bed bug fight, it’s also important to note that the Shark steam mop is an entirely different product, and would not be an effective tool for this purpose. Just saying. A little due diligence is in order when shopping for the right steamer, and Amazon is a great place to start your search. Great deals can be found for a plethora of household items, as you may already know.

Will steam kill bed bugs? Sure it will. Heat treatment for bed bugs is quickly becoming the least invasive way of dealing with these menacing parasites. Is this the best way to handle a bed bug infestation? Probably not, unless the problem is isolated to the mattress and box spring area of the home. When we were affected by bed bugs, we were lucky in the sense that most of the damage was being done at or near the mattresses of our home.

They had gotten into the area where the carpet meets the wall, but it wasn’t anything that couldn’t be easily treated. Our exterminators had the problem resolved in 3 treatments, and we’ve been bed bug free ever since. We probably could have treated the infestation with steam, but it wasn’t necessary in our case.

Unless you feel comfortable with the process of effectively treating bed bugs with steam, I would leave things like this to the professionals. If you have a steam cleaner handy, and you want to get rid of a small nest of bed bugs on your bedding, and perhaps save and salvage the mattresses and box springs of your home, then by all means give them a quick steam cleaning and see how easy it can be to topically treat small infestations.

  1. bedbugs are hard to get rid of low budget? Buy a shark steamer. We spent about 2200 on raid cans and bed zippers, another 3 grand for two treatments not including the furniture we have to replace and unfortunately DDT ain’t comming back. This whole issue is about money, but when money’s not an issue and you can’t rid them we need the goverment to bring back some chemicals…
