How to get rid of gnats in the house naturally and easily. ‘Gnat’ is a rather generic term used to represent all sorts of swarming, pesky insects, including fruit flies, fungus gnats (fungus gnat), midges, biting flies, punkies and the ‘no see um’ insect of legend and lore.

Truth is, gnats are everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, and they thrive in dank, humid environments. This fact alone explains why the summer months bring out the gnats in swarms, and they are almost unavoidable in the outdoors. Last year, I could not help but notice that I shared the golf courses in the greater D.C. and Northern Virginia area with gnats on an alarming level.

Just because the humid, sweltering months bring the scourge of gnats, doesn’t mean that we have to live with them in our homes. There is nothing worse than sharing your abode with unwanted creatures, like gnats, wasps, bed bugs, etc. Bed bugs are difficult to get rid of, but gnats and wasps can be dealt with accordingly.

A good wasp repellent will solve that problem before it gets started, but dealing with gnats starts at the most fundamental of levels. As with any household pests, cleanliness is next to Godliness. If you keep a clean, maintained, nearly sterilized environment, then the gnats will naturally stay away.

Remember, gnats love a humid environment, which means they will be naturally drawn to the kitchen and bathroom areas, especially dirty drains and sinks. To get rid of gnats, simply keep any drains clean. the best way to do this is to use a bit of bleach. gnats are attracted to sweet, vinegar’y scents, and bleach will help eliminate both from the drains of your household.

If you already have a slight gnat problem, then cleaning will just be the start of things. If you want to catch those that are already making themselves at home, then you can construct some simple gnat traps. Take a few Mason jars with some holes punched in the lids, then add vinegar, sugar and a few drops of dish-washing liquid. Once the gnats have been attracted and fallen for the ruse, they will have much difficulty escaping the jar traps and they will drown. While this is great for catching gnats, it won’t solve the problem.

Getting rid of gnats starts with the basics, and the basics start with a bit of education. If you understand the motivations and attractions of any household pest, it then becomes much easier to deal with them, and prevent them in the first place. Also, it should be noted that gnats are also attracted to over-watered plants, so take it easy with all the water, already…!

gnatrol and other gnat removal products can be found at sites like Amazon. These should probably only be used in extreme cases. Remember, if you take care of things in the prevention stages, then chemicals and other products like gnat traps just won’t be necessary in the long run.

gnat bites are more of a nuisance than anything else, really. Think along the lines of mosquito bites, and that’s pretty much what we’re dealing with here. Keep the bitten areas clean and try not to itch and rub the areas, as this will just cause more harm than good.
